Big Fat Moon by Sugarstick

This is the last tune that Sugarstick ever recorded, and it means a great deal to me for that and other reasons. Even today, the feelings captured therein still raise the hairs on the back of my neck.
This is probably not the final mix Jules would’ve wanted, but the case was closed and so I asked the lovely Pat of IndieNetunes to master it for me.

The song tells the story of the struggle taking place in me at the time between “common sense” - if you like; maintaining the status quo for the sake of a quiet life – and the surrendering to the process of falling in love.
The “Big Fat Moon” represents the madness, the light of illusion, and “the stars” the ingredients of the dust we allow to settle on our lives, which causes a mess when disturbed.
“What will it cost me?” I wondered.
Well, it did cost me a few things, but it was worth it.

Not what one might expect in choosing "Rock", but it does have some nice chunky guitarring, so it is thereby admitted into the club. Speaking of which, this has that techno clubbish dance music vibe in a large dose...but forgivable because the mix is damn creative. Good variation and build, very solid bridge. Some tastily unexpected shifts in direction.
Well blended, creative vocal harmonies.
I think Brian Eno would go for this probably. And so would I.

This song was right in the middle for me. I was never fully grabbed a hold of, although I feel like I should've been. The singer's voice is the right one for the song, but seemed thin and boxed into the middle while the instruments were stretched wide away from it to the sides. Maybe add some lows to the vocals, and possibly double track them to thicken, especially maybe on the chorus where the dynamics jump but the vocals don't? As far as the song, I like the lyrics, I like the "Kicking up the stars" hook, and I ALSO like the suggested emotions, which the singer comes very close to capturing mood-wise. So . . . dynamics, I guess . . . add some punch and some blend so we're sucked into the world that the singer's agonizing over.

Lyrics

Big fat moon
Is rising up to fool me down
She says I know what you need
Damn you’re so easy to read
I’m working on it

Sly sleek sun
He heats my bones and dares me grow
He says I got what you wanted
Now you go take it for granted
I’m working on it

Chorus.
I wanna make a wish and feel that something’s getting through
I wanna spend the night in deference to me and you
So what will it cost me?
Kicking up the stars, kicking up the stars
Kicking up the stars, kicking up the stars

Wide blue sky
Is full of tails that pull my eyes
They say we’re going your way
While you waste another day
I’m working on it

I wanna make a wish and feel that something’s getting through
I wanna spend the night in deference to me and you
So what will it cost you?
Kicking up the stars, kicking up the stars
Kicking up the stars, kicking up the stars

Ooo when I see her rising on the waves
Ooo then I feel you riding all the way
To bathe me

Big fat moon
She drags me dreaming in her wake
She says it’s there for the taking
But I’ll be gone by your waking
I’m working on it

I wanna make a wish and feel that something’s getting through
I wanna spend the night in deference to me and you
So what will it cost me you?
Kicking up the stars, kicking up the stars
Kicking up the stars, kicking up the stars
What will it cost me?
Kicking up the stars, kicking up the stars…
