Starbox/The Donner Party Menu

Starbox/The Donner Party Menu

Postby PopTodd » Tue Sep 20, 2011 1:09 pm

Both of these bands are the same one guy - Kevin Ryan. Apparently, he plays and sings everything.
I discovered him at Garageband and have not heard a damn thing about him since, which is really tragic, because the guy has the complete package. He writes amazing songs, comes up with incredible arrangements, and can execute it all himself. One of those rare finds.
I've tried getting a hold of him since the GB shutdown, but to no avail. I don't want to keep trying either, for fear that he label me a stalker or something.
Apparently, all songs have been taken off the internet.
Thankfully, I have 2 DPM songs on my iTunes. If any of y'all are interested in hearing them, let me know.

I understand there may be mechanical rights problems here pop but is it possible to post the songs on your own domain in a promotional fashion? for streaming only? I'm always interested in hearing great indie music from the here and now and from the then and also from the now soon. so are our more shy members ... (when I recall who they are - I'll let you know)

anyhow - if not, I can PM you my email address. (I don't make it public cus of roxi ... long story - don't ask ... just know that at this stage, you can't be implicated in any of his many seedy scenarios, you're clean)
you can't handle the truth.

well, now I have .... brilliant melody maker. loads of his vocals sound so familiar, till they take unique twists ... and sooo upbeat and positive feeling ... plus huge arrangements with some excellent production ... tho I differ on some of the mix choices. wish he'd have put more emphasis on bringing out his vocals ... and not too keen on the panning of smile doris ... but really - I completely understand the admiration and appreciation of the guy. big big talent. pop gems echoing the best of the past with a stamp of his originality. great stuff - thanks for letting me hear it. recommended to all ...

he actually reminds me slightly of another chicago musician that once looked like he might do well in a larger market ... allen keller ... http://www.indienetunes.com/allen-keller ... aspects are similar, including production, but mostly the approach to edgy familiar melody and instantly pleasing vocals. and the superb musicianship. I believe tho, sadly, keller is out of the game as well. tho I think I recall hearing he was doing well in another field of entertainment/art.

Hey,
Anyone still have the DP stuff? I remember him from GB as well. I remember his profile pic being a Roland Jupiter 6 with a Bowie CD on top of it. I remember being excited hearing Starbox too. Was the song called "Mission Control" or something like that? Todd, do you still have any of that stuff?

I do have some of the DP stuff; sadly, it's only 2 songs.

But in some very interesting related news:
Kevin, the mastermind and sole member of both bands wrote what looks to be a pretty amazing (if prohibitively expensive) book about The Beatles in the studio:

I mean, seriously. This guy is some sort of savant. Touched by genius in so many areas.

Okay, so I was able to get a couple of his songs up to Soundcloud for y'all to hear. Taken long enough, eh?
Still blows me away. I really hope that he is still out there making music.
Here's one tune from each of his incarnations:
Starbox - Lightspeed (The Cosmic Fix)
The Donner Party Menu - Smile, Doris, Smile
Seriously... LISTEN and dig.
So, so great.

Lovely-nice. Hope he sues you.

I got two or three unpolished songs off GB by remarkably unambitious artists - who I had brief conversations with - and always wanted to 'promote' them but, well, you just never know do you? The UK is a small country, someone could have a bread knife in your eye by tea time.
To save time, assume I know everything

I hope he just comes around.
I'll take them down in a heartbeat. No desire to profit from his music, just want other folks to know/hear. It's too good to be lost.

Is this possibly the same guy? Voice is similar.

http://kevinryanmusic.com/music/

I saw another Kevin Ryan who makes $35,000 acoustic guitars, but it was pretty obviously not him.

Or this KR.

Or this one.

Or perhaps an Irish one.

Or that guy who wrote the Beatles bio.
