Previous history again

Postby pharquartt » Fri Feb 19, 2010 8:00 am

This one is for the relative newbies around here who don't know much about Krispy's sordid past.

Z, flea, charvie, etc, may not be aware that Krispy had a period in her life where she was forced to sing in a cabaret, having temporarily given up on Industrial Rock.

She was billing herself as Kimmie Le Krispe and sang the following number. (this was an early collab - she let me play cowbell on this one.)

i thought she looked pretty good in satin.....

Here's Kim singing "Love for Free".

Good God I love this tune! Excellent production and vocals throughout. Simply awesome.

I remember I think, another torch song you and Kim did. You may not be the cutting age experimentalist, Rick, but you do manage to revitalize the big music of a day gone by.

It is a shame that each musical generation tends to reject the old in preference for the new. There are always exceptions, such as yourself, and there is still an audience beyond the oldtimers, some who might find this very refreshing and inspiring. I suppose there will be oldies who will find some reason not to like it as much as the real thing because they have learned to love most what the know best, and even this, as nostalgic as it seems to us, may be just too new.

I just can't recall any song you've done which is not of this vein, although the bride wore blue was a very cool fusion. I'm not complaining! Just sayin'.....

I hate to review anything by Krispy, Jaymz, or SuedePudding 'cuz I just end up gushing with praise.

Really smooth. Nice keywork, Rick. Currently listening repeatedly...

after not having heard this in well over a year, I'm incredibly pleased to say that it still kinda tears me up (with joy) .... like it's a song rick penned specifically for kim to sing to me. I know the song completely by heart - maybe better than the participants and it is nothing but great memories for me. it actually marks the beginning of my journey to be with her - hell, I remember singing it back to her on the high streets of manchester in oct 06 - just before I caught my first english man-flu from the hundreds of germ-ridden mall rats there!

just before meeting spenny for the first time and drinking him under the table on canal st.

so as before, it's not a song for me to review. just too close to it.

having said that - I do wanna point out that getting this puppy walking was no stroll in the park. a whole lot of effort went into it on the part of rick, kim and of course - noz, who mastered it lovingly and painstakingly. as well, during the process - whether rick knew it or not (and he did - tho maybe he forgot cus he's ... well ... rick) suede and a few others were listening along - trying to be helpful on making it as great as it is. but I recall, it was a great struggle and the end result shows how much passion went into it.

Kim, this sounds incredible. This may be your true calling.

On the technical side, the vocal sound is great too. The piano & drum sounds are clean too...really nice & played wonderfully. The strings aren't blowing me away, but they work well as a washy backdrop.

Excellent!

I'm sure I heard this back in the day, but it was an enjoyable listen once again.
Fabulous composition had me wondering if this weren't a classic standard that I should already know about. Some great arrangement with melody very deftly delivered by the sultry diva. Maybe the one thing composition-wise to improve might have been to end on a jazzier chord where the singer goes to an unexpected note, rather this very conventional resolve.
As well delivered as the fake sax is played, I would say you'd do better just to turn it to piano and do us some ivory tickling. Other than that soloing though, I generally liked the instrument sounds, sitting just right behind the singer...had me wishing you could craft me something along these same lines, you know?
As I returned across the lands I'd known
I recognized the fields where I'd once played
I had to stop in my tracks for fear
Of walking on the mines I'd laid

Damn, what a great song!

And Madame Le Krispe, that vocal goes beyond sexy and into the land of the film heroine whom we grow emotionally invested in, whose fate we actually worry about, just absolutely arresting. Bravo!

The track as a whole has too much of a MIDI feel for me. Way too much synth and not enough realism for this flat-out perfect song. And I mean that, this song is a perfect write. It would work just as well for Billie Holiday as for Tom Waits as for Scarlett Menstruating Johansson--really doesn't matter, the song stands on its own. But the instruments sound a bit too synthetic, and the production is overinflated...would have so much more impact with less limiting, less plug-ins, and more natural dynamics...or perhaps a more serious use of room-oriented reverbs on each track...put us right into that jazz club in the second row with a highball of vodka and lime.

Great stuff here! One of the best-written songs I've heard in a long time.
