My impression lately has been that Spotify and Pandora are getting the most plays. Unfortunately, they are both being accused of making bazillions of dollars for themselves and virtually nothing for the artists.

I'd like to know what people's Facebook attention choices are based on.

For me, anything created by a friend takes priority: songs, paintings, poems, books, videos, whatever. I kinda hope that others would do the same for me but the only time I got significant plays was when I threatened to commit suicide. People do like drama.
Have to admit I'm disappointed by the lack of interest from my old 'real life' friends who are music/arty types.

I'm unlikely to watch a general share video unless it's a subject that interests me sufficiently and is less than three minutes. I probably won't watch it if it has MUST WATCH THIS! FUNNIEST VIDEO EVER! under it.

Pictures. People like pictures, they're instant. I bet if you put a picture next to a song - an interesting picture - a play becomes more likely.

No amount of cajoling get get people to do anything other than what they want to do. That's what I've learned.

So many of my musicmaker friends on Facebook are currently expressing frustration about getting other people to download songs or pay for songs or listen to songs or even acknowledge songs. But the people just do what they want.

Ten years ago, the internet seemed like a golden opportunity for musicians. Ten years later, a lot of songwriting sites have either folded or become knitting circles for their cluster of regulars who come to resemble the daydrinkers at local pubs. People no longer need to "have" music...we can just play it. It's a real hard sell, getting people to purchase...or even click. It's quaint. It's what old people keep trying to do, like selling VCRs at rummage sales.

One way to look at it: Art is being freed from the shackles of commerce, and we can once again be the outcasts we probably ought to be. After all, it gets a little tiring trying to make our art conform to what a consensus of listeners might call a standard. Maybe it's better this way.

It's just supply and demand. The tech revolution gave the masses access to the means of production and distribution which flooded the market and killed demand.

The big studios of the early 20th century realized that creating "stars" and then "super-stars" was a good marketing technique, so with that and their ability to control supply, they made billions of dollars. But now they've lost control of supply and the whole "star" fantasy that we all bought in to is wearing thin, and it's hard to create a star without controlling the media supply chain anyway.

So in an intensely competitive situation, the only way to be successful is to create and market a superior product. Just ask Steve Jobs. Well, you could have asked him.

But people still love music as much as they ever did so, if our stuff was really that good, or at least stood out from the crowd, our friends on Soundcloud or Facebook would gladly promote it.
